BCFC Foundation

At Turtle Media, we partnered with Birmingham City FC Foundation to create a website that reflects the energy, purpose and community impact of the charity. As the official charity of Birmingham City Football Club, the Foundation supports adults and children across the region through four key pillars - Football for All, Healthy Living, Skills and Education, and Stronger Communities.

The brief was to develop a digital platform that would clearly communicate the Foundation’s mission and make its programmes more visible, accessible and engaging. With such a wide range of community initiatives under one organisation, the website needed to balance clarity, usability and credibility, while helping visitors quickly understand the value of the Foundation’s work. The organisation’s focus on creating healthier communities and better opportunities through the power of football gave the project a strong message to build around.

The final result is a professional and approachable online presence that helps Birmingham City FC Foundation share its story, promote its programmes and strengthen engagement with the communities it serves. It is a website designed not just to inform, but to support awareness, trust and long-term impact.

Background

Birmingham City FC Foundation already had a website in place, but it was no longer reflecting the identity, professionalism or community focus of the organisation. Visually, the site did not align closely enough with the wider Birmingham City Football Club brand, which meant there was a disconnect between the Foundation and the historic club it represents. Just as importantly, the existing website did not do enough to showcase the range of activities, programmes and support the Foundation delivers across the local area.

At Turtle Media, our role was to create a new website that brought the Foundation’s digital presence up to the right standard. The site needed to feel clearly connected to the club’s branding while also giving the Foundation its own space to communicate its mission, impact and community work more effectively. It was important that visitors could quickly understand who the Foundation is, what it does and how it helps adults, children and families across Birmingham.

Alongside the visual and structural improvements, usability was a major focus. The new website had to be fully mobile responsive, ensuring supporters, participants, parents and partners could access information easily across all devices. With such a wide range of users engaging with the Foundation online, a smooth and accessible mobile experience was essential.

Another key part of the project was improving the way users interacted with donations, events and other important actions on the website. Rather than sending visitors away to third-party platforms, we were tasked with integrating external systems more seamlessly into the website experience. This helped create a more joined-up journey for users, making it easier to donate, engage with events and interact with the Foundation without unnecessary barriers or disruption.

The end goal was a website that looked on-brand, worked seamlessly and gave the Foundation a stronger platform to promote its work in the community.

The Project

This project came with a number of challenges from the outset. One of the most important was working within the Foundation’s branding in a way that felt closely connected to Birmingham City FC, while still making it clear to users that they were visiting the charity’s own website rather than the main football club site. Striking that balance was key to giving the Foundation a strong and recognisable identity, without losing the trust and familiarity that comes with the wider club brand.

While branding and user clarity were important considerations, the biggest challenge was the timeline. We were tasked with designing, building and launching the website within just a matter of weeks, which meant every stage of the project needed to move quickly and efficiently. From the initial planning and design decisions through to development, integrations and testing, the project required a focused approach to ensure nothing was lost despite the compressed schedule.

There was also a technical challenge around deployment. The website needed to be launched on the client’s own server environment, which introduced a different set of technologies, access requirements and hosting considerations than our team would usually work with. This meant adapting quickly, navigating unfamiliar systems and ensuring the site could be delivered smoothly within the client’s infrastructure.

Despite the pressure of the timescale and the added technical complexity, the project was delivered as a fully functional, on-brand website that gave Birmingham City FC Foundation a far stronger digital presence. The result was a platform that not only met the brief visually and technically, but also provided the Foundation with a professional online home to support its work in the community.
